Golf – sweater, car or maybe a sport…?
Practically everyone hearing this word imagines a car. However, for the vast majority of Poles the word “golf” is associated with a sweater. But the word itself was created before people drove cars and wore sweaters. The name is associated with a sport that involves placing a small ball in a hole which is not much larger.
The exact date that this sport was founded in not completely known. Reaching deeper into history, you can find a mention of that sport or form of entertainment  by placing or hitting the ball or balls with something round in the fewest number of “moves” to the hole and this was played in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt and China. Generally speaking, each nation had a game in which some object was struck with wooden sticks for a particular purpose.  Most of today’s sports such as golf, rounders, cricket, hockey and baseball arose from these.
It is understood that our current golf derives directly from sheep herdsmen who, out of boredom, started hitting stones with sticks. The sticks hit the stone which rolled over, and so continues the story of golf. It was in  the eleventh and twelfth century that there were shepherds playing with clubs in the Netherlands, Denmark and Scotland. The sport was then called “colf”, which in in the Dutch dialect means “stick or pole”. The nobility, noticing that pheasants, had some fun and tried the game alone and liked it. But in those days there was a very clear divide between social classes. The nobility took this sport for themselves and put a ban on this sport for the peasantry. Practically,  from the very beginning,  golf was the sport of the aristocracy – out of reach of ordinary citizens. In continental Europe, practically everyone  fought over land with everyone else, thus there was little time for entertainment. Scots who fought only with their opponent – England, could play the game of golf. However, they also prohibited the sport. The Scottish king, James IV, issued a decree banning the game of golf, because instead of preparing for war, the nobility played golf. It was not until James VI, upon his accession to the throne of England and Scotland, in one of his decrees allowed golf to be played.

Why golf …? Why has everyone in the West (generally west of us, up to and including Asia Nowadays anyone who wants to play golf in the West can do so. Golf has become a sport for both business people and anyone who wants to cultivate this sport. In Poland, there is still a stereotype golfer – a pensioner) started playing golf (sometimes under compulsion) …? Why do they show presidents, politicians, businessmen, celebrities playing golf? Why are so many companies (in Poland identify themselves with golf) in their advertisements  ….? As they say, if you do not know what it is, it’s about the money …!
Yes it’s true. Golf is strongly associated with money. Not only professional but also amateur. I’m not talking here just about older gentlemen who throughout their life were trying to earn more and only now can enjoy a quiet retirement playing golf.
However, what you can win with one perfect shot, in a tournament, and how much you can win betting  will be described in the next article. We will also check how much Tiger Woods earns or is the Green Jacket more important than $1 000 000, or is technique more important than luck…?
